Understanding bias and propaganda in literature and media

Posted by M.Sibanda on Sunday, May 25, 2014, In : ERS Staff Desk

As an English scholar studying various texts, you need to know how to differentiate between texts that are impartial (neutral and give facts only)and texts that are biased (one sided and often manipulated to suit the writer’s point of view). When communicated via mass media, biased information is termed: propaganda.

English students are most likely to meet bias and propaganda in their literature texts (plays, novels, short stories and poetry), oral texts such as speeches as well as in fil...

Spring

SPRING

The amazing sweet smell of trees

The lovely sweet songs sung by birds

The heat of the sun rising from the sun…

Spring…spring…spring

It excites me…It explores my mood to

The limit of happiness…It squashes the anger

Out of my heart. . Spring is knocking on the door?

Oh. I welcome  it with warm

Because it keeps me in a dancing mood.

It’s fresh, it’s amazing and sweet…

It smells of fresh violets…

In spring there is no anger, greediness …

Spring brings...

LIFE

 LIFE by Tsepang Khoboko

Life, the period between birth and death, simple??? Not really!!! Life has its complications many of which we bring upon ourselves. In other words; life could be anything we want it to be just by simply mastering a few disciplines.

What is life if you do not have a purpose or aim??? Nothing!!! Believe it or not, the successful always have a number of projects planned. They look forward to these; after all, anyone of them could change their lives. Setting goals and bo...

Using television as a tool for learning English

Posted by M.A Sibanda on Monday, April 2, 2012, In : ERS Staff Desk

Did you know that television can be used as a tool for learning and improving your English skills? Besides the obvious way of watching educational programmes on the learning channels, any programme that is in good English can be a resource for learning new English words, new English expressions, as well as pronunciation.

The trick though is to choose a news programme, documentary, talk show, comedy or other production that uses formal and good English. I enjoy watching the likes of ENews, ...

I AM A WINNER

Posted by BELLA MBUTHO on Monday, March 26, 2012, In : ERS Poetry

I AM  A WINNER

I have got a story to tell

A story to share

I am perceived to be a loser

When I am actually a winner

I’m a go-getter

That’s what winners are, go getters

I spread my wings wide

I leave no stones unturned

I am an explorer, exploring life to the fullest

That’s what winners are explorers

I face challenges head-on

I am an overcomer

That’s what winners are overcomers

I walk the walk

Talk the talk

I walk tall

With my head held high

Because that’...

I AM A WOMAN

Posted by Bella Mbutho on Monday, March 26, 2012, In : ERS Poetry

I AM A WOMAN

I am a woman

My beauty is not defined by my braided hair and earrings

Instead my beauty runs deeper than that

I am defined by my inner-self

The unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit

Soft but yet so strong

Intense and very powerful

I am a woman

Watch me bringing about life into this world

Watch me protecting and comforting with these hands of mine

Watch me easing the pain with my tender smile

I am a woman

You strike a woman you strike a rock

I’m considered as the one who holds the kn...

Opportunities

Posted by Boitumelo Koribe (Grade 9) on Thursday, March 1, 2012, In : ERS Poetry

OPPORTUNITIES

Opportunity is a chance or time to do something.

Do we ever wonder why life gives us opportunities?

Yes….because we are given a chance to prove ourselves in what we are good at.

Not everyone get that chance,

Why not make the most of it?

It is not in our everyday life that we get opportunities,

So what do we do when we get them…..?

We grab them and make a success of ourselves.

We delight in our prosperity and achievement!

Opportunities are like sunris...

Paradise

Posted by Mabebe Mogorosi (Grade 11) on Thursday, March 1, 2012, In : ERS Poetry

Paradise

Is this world a paradise? I wonder to myself every time I see people happy. So much sorrow and pain in this world and we call it paradise? So much war; we lose someone special every day, and still we call this world paradise? Women and children are abused and we don’t even care because we think that this world is paradise.

What is paradise? Is heaven paradise? What does it feel like to be in paradise? Is it a warm, happy and fuzzy feeling? We all want to go to a place called para...

Get Educated... ... ...

Posted by Anelisa Mkhapha (Grade 9) on Thursday, March 1, 2012, In : ERS Poetry

GET EDUCATED……..

In life it is good to plan and implement things.

Early education is an investment of a lifetime.

No one will ever take away your education.

Working hard, sleeping late and focusing on your studies will reward you with good things. Education is a treasure that does not rot. It is up to you as an individual to decide what you intend to do with your future. Quitting school will never bring good fruit in your life. It is good to hang with people who have light and goal...

Believe in yourself

Posted by Gaopalelwe "Pali" Matlabe on Thursday, March 1, 2012, In : ERS Poetry

Believe in yourself

Life may not always be pleasant,

Some days will be harder than the others,

Some people will always try to belittle your worth.

Some things may break you but beyond

all the unpleasantness of life there is hope for all.

Sometimes you might wake up and feel

As if the world is on your shoulders, it might

seem too  heavy to carry, but tomorrow still

awaits with its blessings.

In life you may lose the people you hold

close to your heart, and at times it

A short peek into the active and passive voice

Posted by M.A Sibanda on Tuesday, February 21, 2012, In : ERS Staff Desk

Any good high school student of English ought to know what passive and active voice is, hence I should really go into the topic of the day and explain when and why each of the two "voices" is used. Rather than assume that everyone knows, let me nonetheless begin by touching on what we mean by passive and active voice.

Active voice is when a sentence is written in a manner that the subject of the sentence is at the beginning of the sentence and it plays an active role in the action described ...

Promises

Posted by Tsepang Khoboko (Grade 9) on Thursday, February 9, 2012, In : ERS Articles
What exactly is a promise? Well according to the dictionary, to promise someone is to tell them that you will certainly do something. Surely that is a fair explanation of the word but what does it mean to us? What is the point of a promise?

Nowadays people tend to make and break promises as if breaking promises is nothing. This simply means that the word 'promise' has lost its value. A promise is now just a group of words put together to make someone else feel better...well... until it is...

CHANGE

Posted by Elisa Mokale (Grade 12) on Thursday, February 9, 2012, In : ERS Poetry

I brought you confessions from the BLACK list collection,

And life’s journey is to help me set free,

I’ve said it before and I will say it once more,

I am like a train embarking on an extended train track.

And there is no stopping me:

I own the DREAM ENTERPRISE,

And we moving from state to state.

With both sides of the brain united,

I’m going to cause a world wild epidemic,

Change along with prosperity.

I’m like the GREAT Ali with his lefts and rights; Mr Winston Churchi...

Why do we need to know how to summarise?

Posted by M.A Sibanda (msibanda@edmundrice.co.za) on Wednesday, January 25, 2012, In : ERS Staff Desk

This is a question that I have been asked more times than I can remember by my English students. The answer is very simple. In life, time is not always on our side and we often need to keep it short and sweet. Although sweating to reduce a lengthy passage to a hundred words within twenty-five minutes is not everyone's cup of tea, it is bound to help you later in life. Let us explore a few of the many examples where summarising occurs in one form or the other.

Solving the dilemma of Chat and Text language in the English class

Posted by M.A Sibanda (msibanda@edmundrice.co.za) on Monday, January 23, 2012, In : ERS Staff Desk
One of the dilemmas we as English teachers face nowadays is the manner in which today’s student opts to communicate in Chat language, also known as Textese or SMSish. It seems the more we try to rectify this phenomenon, the more our young ones pour in the LOLs, IDKs and BrBs. The technological world does not seem to be helping either as it churns out Facebook, Mxit, BBM, Whatsapp and similar applications on every other day. With news of Txt speak becoming acceptable in examinations in count...
