![]() | About the Edmund Rice School English Society |
Edmund Rice is an independent school located in Welkom, Free State Province. Founded in 1996 as a satellite school of St Dominics College, Welkom, it has since the beginning of 2011 become a separate entity. With only a few matric classes under its belt, these last two years have seen Edmund Rice School attain 100% pass rates and develop into an academic force within the City of Welkom, the Lejweleputswa District and the whole Free State. Currently the school is ranked by the Free State Department of Education as one of the top forty schools in the province. Our small but dynamic English Department consists of Mrs Gail Van Sittert (Intermediate Phase), Mrs Ashley Burger (Senior Phase) and Mr Mthokozisi A. Sibanda (FET Phase). We enjoy the valuable support of our headmaster Mr Andre de Bruin. We believe that continued success in the teaching and learning of English Home Language at Edmund Rice does not merely depend on maintaining standards and methods, but continuously introducing new ideas, methodology and technology. While English is not the only important or official language in South Africa, it remains the main mode of communication in most classroom and workplace interactions. It therefore has to be taken seriously by all students. Our aims and objectives at the ERS-ES include:
